Built on a Lifetime of Believing in Others

Betty and Karl Search were lifelong St. Louis residents who believed, above all else, that education was the great equalizer. After careers in public service and healthcare respectively, the Searches quietly funded the education of dozens of young people throughout their lives. When they passed, their family chose to formalize that tradition.

Established in 1997 with an initial gift from the Search family estate, the Betty And Karl Search Scholarship Fund has grown into a pillar of the St. Louis educational community. We provide merit-and-need-based scholarships, mentorship, and academic support to students who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, civic commitment, and the kind of resilience Betty and Karl admired most.

Voices From Our Scholars

Receiving the Betty Search First-Generation Scholarship changed the trajectory of my life. I was the first in my family to attend university, and the financial relief allowed me to focus entirely on my studies. I graduated with honors and now work as a registered nurse โ€” exactly the dream that once felt impossible.

The Karl Search STEM Award gave me the freedom to pursue research I was genuinely passionate about. My mentor through the program, a St. Louis engineer, opened doors I didn't even know existed. I'm now completing my PhD in biomedical engineering โ€” following in Karl's own footsteps, it seems.

As someone who worked two jobs and cared for a younger sibling while in community college, the Search Vocational Award felt like someone finally seeing me. Frequently Asked Questions

Eligibility varies by program, but the core requirements for most awards include: (1) current residency in the greater St. Louis metropolitan region (Missouri or Illinois side), (2) enrollment or intent to enroll in an accredited postsecondary institution โ€” including four-year universities, community colleges, or accredited trade programs, (3) demonstrated financial need, and (4) a minimum GPA of 2.75 (3.0 for STEM and Graduate awards). First-generation students and those from underrepresented communities are especially encouraged to apply. Please review individual program pages for specific criteria.

Applications for the 2027 scholarship year open on August 15, 2026, and the final deadline is November 30, 2026, at 11:59 PM Central Time. We do not accept late submissions. Award notifications go out in February 2027, with funds disbursed at the start of the Fall 2027 semester. We strongly encourage applicants to begin gathering materials โ€” transcripts, recommendations, essays โ€” well in advance of the deadline.

We are proud that 87 cents of every donated dollar goes directly to student scholarships or scholar support services (mentorship, academic advising, career workshops). The remaining 13% covers essential administrative operations, fundraising costs, and compliance. Our board reviews these ratios annually and has committed to maintaining student-direct spending above 85%. We publish our full Form 990 and annual financial reports publicly on our website.

Yes. The Betty And Karl Search Scholarship Fund is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization (EIN: 25-6699396). Donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent permitted by U.S. law. Upon receiving your donation, we will email you an official tax receipt that you may use for your records when filing with the IRS. For estate planning or planned giving inquiries, please contact us at info@bettyandkarlsearchscholarshipfund.org.

Students may only hold one Betty And Karl Search Scholarship at a time. However, current scholars whose circumstances have changed significantly (e.g., switching from a four-year program to a graduate program) may apply for a different program upon completing or forfeiting their current award. Our committee evaluates each case individually. Search Scholarships may also be stacked with awards from other organizations, and we actively encourage our scholars to pursue all financial aid opportunities available to them.

We welcome mentor applications year-round. We look for professionals with at least five years of career experience in any field, a genuine interest in supporting young people, and availability for a minimum of two hours per month. Mentors are matched with scholars based on field of study, career interests, and personal background. The process includes a brief application, a background check, and a one-hour orientation session. To apply, use the contact form on this page and indicate you are interested in becoming a Search Mentor.

Scholars who fall below the minimum GPA threshold are placed on a one-semester academic probation rather than immediately losing their award. During this period, they receive additional academic support and counseling. If the GPA recovers to the required level by the end of the probationary semester, the scholarship continues uninterrupted. If not, the award is suspended pending a review by the scholarship committee. We treat each situation with compassion and consider extenuating circumstances โ€” life is complex, and Betty and Karl knew that.

We offer a range of partnership tiers starting at $2,500 annually. Corporate and organizational partners receive: public recognition on our website, event materials, and social media; opportunities to meet and engage with scholars; access to our annual impact report; and the satisfaction of knowing your investment is transforming lives in your community. Named scholarship categories are available for contributions of $25,000 or more per year. To discuss partnership opportunities, please email Sandra Tillman at info@bettyandkarlsearchscholarshipfund.org or use our contact form.
